Hundreds of people gathered Sunday to support the family of Prestin and Zaiden Strassenburg, two young brothers who died following a July crash.
The September 13 benefit was originally planned for the Millard American Legion. Organizers moved it to the Embassy Suites in La Vista to accommodate the expected turnout.
Guests could purchase $10 meals, raffle tickets and items through a silent auction. Donated items included handmade quilts, fishing trips and other services and experiences.
Support also came from outside the area. Organizers received contributions from people in Tennessee, Minnesota and South Dakota, along with donations from local churches and community members.
Prestin was 10 years old. Zaiden was 5. The brothers were riding in the back seat of their father’s vehicle when it was struck near 114th Street and West Center Road in July. Prestin died on July 10. Zaiden died several days later.
An official online fund was also established through the Omaha Police Officers Association to help the Strassenburg family with medical bills, funeral costs and other expenses.
The large turnout gave the family a clear message: People continue to remember Prestin and Zaiden, and they want to help.
