Oscars 2021 Will Take Place In Person

Over the course of the pandemic a number of live shows—from concerts to awards show—were cancelled, postponed or went completely virtual. With news of a vaccine for COVID-19 on the horizon, the Academy confirmed that the Oscars will take place live and in person next year.

“The Oscars in-person telecast will happen,” a rep from the Academy and ABC told Variety. Until now, it was unclear whether the Academy Awards would take place virtually like the Emmy Awards did over the summer.

“The Academy has done a walkthrough of the Dolby recently to see all the multiple options,” a publicist for the awards ceremony added. The Oscars are held at the Dolby Theater, which seats up to 3,400 people, in Los Angeles every year. While the show plans to go forward with an in person telecast, there will likely still be restrictions limiting the number of people allowed to attend in place.

Earlier this year, the Oscars were pushed from February 2021 until April 25, 2021 due to the pandemic. Four other film award shows—the Golden Globes, Critics Choice, SAG and BAFTA—will take place ahead of the Oscars. The Globes will air live from The Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills in February. Both the SAG Awards and the Critics Choice are still considering hosting virtual ceremonies. The BAFTAs, which take place in the U.K., will be subject to different rules and restrictions than the U.S. based shows.
