Boxer Ryan Garcia tested positive for the banned performance-enhancing substance Ostarine one day prior to his upset win against Devin Haney last month, according to a Voluntary Anti-Doping Association letter sent to all parties involved with the fight obtained by ESPN on Wednesday (May 1).
Garcia, 25, took the test prior to the fight, however, the results weren't made available until a later date. The boxer has 10 days to request that his B-sample be tested after his A-sample had also screened positive for 19-norandrosterone, though its presence wasn't confirmed as of Wednesday's report.
"Everybody knows that I don't cheat," Garcia said in a video shared on his X account. "... Never taken a steroid ... I don't even know where to get steroids. ... I barely take supplements. Big lies, I beat his ass."
Garcia knocked out Haney three times during his majority-decision win on April 20, though the result will likely be overturned unless the rare situation in which his B-sample yields a negative result occurs. The California native also failed to make weight, registering at 3.2 pounds over the 140-pound limit, which led to Haney retaining his junior welterweight title despite the loss.
Garcia has a 25-1 record in 26 career professional fights with his only career loss coming by knockout to Gervonta Davis on April 22, 2023.
